Haptic feedback in mixed-reality environment
The training process in industries is assisted with computer solutions to reduce costs. Normally, computer systems created to simulate assembly or machine manipulation are implemented with traditional Human-Computer interfaces (keyboard, mouse, etc). But, this usually leads to systems that are far from the real procedures, and thus not efficient in term of training. Two techniques could improve this procedure: mixed-reality and haptic feedback. We propose in this paper to investigate the integration of both of them inside a single framework. We present the hardware used to design our training system. A feasibility study allows one to establish testing protocol. The results of these tests convince us that such system should not try to simulate realistically the interaction between real and virtual objects as if it was only real object
Advanced virtual reality technologies for surveillance and security applications
We present a system that exploits advanced Virtual Reality technologies to create a surveillance and security system. Surveillance cameras are carried by a mini Blimp which is tele-operated using an innovative Virtual Reality interface with haptic feedback. An interactive control room (CAVE) receives multiple video streams from airborne and fixed cameras. Eye tracking technology allows for turning the user's gaze into the main interaction mechanism; the user in charge can examine, zoom and select specific views by looking at them. Video streams selected at the control room can be redirected to agents equipped with a PDA. On-field agents can examine the video sent by the control center and locate the actual position of the airborne cameras in a GPS-driven map. The PDA interface reacts to the user's gestures. A tilt sensor recognizes the position in which the PDA is held and adapts the interface accordingly. The prototype we present shows the added value of integrating VR technologies into a complex application and opens up several research directions in the areas of tele-operation, Multimodal Interfaces, etc. Copyright © 2006 by the Association for Computing Machinery, Inc
Supernova remnants with magnetars: clues to magnetar formation
I discuss the lack of observational evidence that magnetars are formed as
rapidly rotating neutron stars. Supernova remnants containing magnetars do not
show the excess of kinetic energy expected for such a formation scenario, nor
is there any evidence for a relic pulsar wind nebula. However, it could be that
magnetars are formed with somewhat slower rotation periods, or that not all
excess rotational energy was used to boost the explosion energy, for example as
a result of gravitational radiation. Another observational tests for the rapid
initial period hypothesis is to look for statistical evidence that about 1% of
the observed supernovae have an additional 1E40-1E44 erg/s excess energy during
the first year, caused by the spin down luminosity of a magnetar. An
alternative scenario for the high magnetic fields of magnetars is the fossil
field hypothesis, in which the magnetic field is inherited from the progenitor
star. Direct observational tests for this hypothesis are harder to formulate,
unless the neutron star formed in the SN1987A explosion emerges as a slowly
rotating magnetar. Finally, I point out the possible connection between the
jets in Cas A and its X-ray point source: the jets in Cas A may indicate that
the explosion was accompanied by an X-ray flash, probably powered by a rapidly
rotating compact object. However, the point source in Cas A does not seem to be
a rapidly rotating neutron star, suggesting that the neutron star has slowed

Lemierre's syndrome and genetic polymorphisms: a case report
BACKGROUND: Lemierre's syndrome presents a classic clinical picture, the pathophysiology of which remains obscure. Attempts have been made to trace genetic predispositions that modify the host detection of pathogen or the resultant systemic reaction. CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year old female, with no previous medical history, was admitted to the intensive care unit for septic shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome and Lemierre's syndrome. Her DNA was assayed for single nucleotide polymorphisms previously incriminated in the detection of the pathogen, the inflammatory response and the coagulation cascade. We observed functional variations in her Toll like 5 receptor (TLR 5) gene and two coagulation variations (Tissue Factor (TF) 603 and Plasminogen-Activator-Inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) 4G-4G homozygosity) associated with thrombotic events. CONCLUSION: The innate immune response and the prothrombogenic mutations could explain, at least in part, the symptoms of Lemierre's syndrome. Genomic study of several patients with Lemierre's syndrome may reveal its pathophysiology
Discovery of VHE gamma-rays from the high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object RGB J0152+017
Aims: The BL Lac object RGB J0152+017 (z=0.080) was predicted to be a very
high-energy (VHE; > 100 GeV) gamma-ray source, due to its high X-ray and radio
fluxes. Our aim is to understand the radiative processes by investigating the
observed emission and its production mechanism using the High Energy
Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) experiment. Methods: We report recent
observations of the BL Lac source RGB J0152+017 made in late October and
November 2007 with the H.E.S.S. array consisting of four imaging atmospheric
Cherenkov telescopes. Contemporaneous observations were made in X-rays by the
Swift and RXTE satellites, in the optical band with the ATOM telescope, and in
the radio band with the Nancay Radio Telescope. Results: A signal of 173
gamma-ray photons corresponding to a statistical significance of 6.6 sigma was
found in the data. The energy spectrum of the source can be described by a
powerlaw with a spectral index of 2.95+/-0.36stat+/-0.20syst. The integral flux
above 300 GeV corresponds to ~2% of the flux of the Crab nebula. The source
spectral energy distribution (SED) can be described using a two-component
non-thermal synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) leptonic model, except in the
optical band, which is dominated by a thermal host galaxy component. The
parameters that are found are very close to those found in similar SSC studies
in TeV blazars. Conclusions: RGB J0152+017 is discovered as a source of VHE
gamma-rays by H.E.S.S. The location of its synchrotron peak, as derived from
the SED in Swift data, allows clearly classification it as a

Impaired short-term functioning of a benthic community from a deep Norwegian Fjord following deposition of mine tailings and sediments
The extraction of minerals from land-based mines necessitates the disposal of large amounts of mine tailings. Dumping and storage of tailings into the marine environment, such as fjords, is currently being performed without knowing the potential ecological consequences. This study investigated the effect of short-term exposure to different deposition depths of inert iron ore tailings (0.1, 0.5, and 3 cm) and dead subsurface sediment (0.5 and 3 cm) on a deep water (200 m) fjord benthic assemblage in a microcosm experiment. Biotic and abiotic variables were measured to determine structural and functional changes of the benthic community following an 11 and 16 day exposure with tailings and dead sediment, respectively. Structural changes of macrofauna, meiofauna, and bacteria were measured in terms of biomass, density, community composition and mortality while measures of oxygen penetration depth, sediment community oxygen consumption and 13C-uptake and processing by biota revealed changes in the functioning of the system. Burial with mine tailings and natural sediments modified the structure and functioning of the benthic community albeit in a different way. Mine tailings deposition of 0.1 cm and more resulted in a reduced capacity of the benthic community to remineralize fresh 13C-labeled algal material, as evidenced by the reduced sediment community oxygen consumption and uptake rates in all biological compartments. At 3 cm of tailings deposition, it was evident that nematode mortality was higher inside the tailings layer, likely caused by reduced food availability. In contrast, dead sediment addition led to an increase in oxygen consumption and bacterial carbon uptake comparable to control conditions, thereby leaving deeper sediment layers anoxic and in turn causing nematode mortality at 3 cm deposition. This study clearly shows that even small levels (0.1 cm) of instantaneous burial by mine tailings may significantly reduce benthic ecosystem functioning on the short term. Furthermore, it reveals the importance of substrate characteristics and origin when studying the effects of substrate addition on marine benthic fauna. Our findings should alert decision makers when considering approval of new deep-sea tailings placement sites as this technique will have major negative impacts on benthic ecosystem functioning over large areas
Ecology and Biogeography of Free-Living Nematodes Associated with Chemosynthetic Environments in the Deep Sea: A Review
Background: Here, insight is provided into the present knowledge on free-living nematodes associated with chemosynthetic environments in the deep sea. It was investigated if the same trends of high standing stock, low diversity, and the dominance of a specialized fauna, as observed for macro-invertebrates, are also present in the nematodes in both vents and seeps.
Methodology: This review is based on existing literature, in combination with integrated analysis of datasets, obtained through the Census of Marine Life program on Biogeography of Deep-Water Chemosynthetic Ecosystems (ChEss).
Findings: Nematodes are often thriving in the sulphidic sediments of deep cold seeps, with standing stock values ocassionaly exceeding largely the numbers at background sites. Vents seem not characterized by elevated densities. Both chemosynthetic driven ecosystems are showing low nematode diversity, and high dominance of single species. Genera richness seems inversely correlated to vent and seep fluid emissions, associated with distinct habitat types. Deep-sea cold seeps and hydrothermal vents are, however, highly dissimilar in terms of community composition and dominant taxa. There is no unique affinity of particular nematode taxa with seeps or vents.
Conclusions: It seems that shallow water relatives, rather than typical deep-sea taxa, have successfully colonized the reduced sediments of seeps at large water depth. For vents, the taxonomic similarity with adjacent regular sediments is much higher, supporting rather the importance of local adaptation, than that of long distance distribution. Likely the ephemeral nature of vents, its long distance offshore and the absence of pelagic transport mechanisms, have prevented so far the establishment of a successful and typical vent nematode fauna. Some future perspectives in meiofauna research are provided in order to get a more integrated picture of vent and seep biological processes, including all components of the marine ecosystem
